Before Intravenous Anesthesia Sedation

Patient Information

Contact Form

We monitor our contact requests several times a day and will usually reply within one business day during open hours.

  • You may not have anything to eat or drink (including water) for eight (8) hours prior to the appointment.
  • Ideally, cut down or stop smoking as soon as possible prior to the day of surgery.
  • A responsible adult must accompany the patient home.
  • The patient should not drive a vehicle or operate any machinery for 24 hours following the IV anesthesia experience.
  • Please wear loose fitting clothing with short sleeves or sleeves which can be rolled up past the elbow, and low-heeled shoes.
  • Contact lenses, jewelry, and dentures must be removed at the time of surgery.
  • Do not wear lipstick, excessive makeup, or nail polish on the day of surgery.
  • If you have an illness such as a cold, sore throat, stomach or bowel upset, please notify the office.
  • If you take daily oral medications, please check with Dr. Tom, Dr. Silva or Dr. Connelly prior to your surgical date for instructions.  Often, routine medications such as blood pressure pills can and should be taken with small sips of water prior to IV sedation.
  • If you would like to listen to music during your IV sedation, we have a portable radio with earphones for you to use, or feel free to bring your own portable music player to listen to your favorite music.
  • If you are not having IV sedation, then there is no need to fast prior to your surgery.  However, we recommend that you do not have a heavy meal prior to receiving laughing gas (nitrous oxide) or an oral sedative.  It is still a good idea to have an adult friend or relative accompany you home after your procedure.  We want you to be safe!
